Now that Uber is being adopted by provinces and municipalities around Canada, the company is starting to be more confident. More importantly, the ride-sharing giant can now integrate itself in the economy and community. For example, Uber has announced a collaboration with the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) that focuses on promoting employment access for hard of hearing and the deaf.
Uber and the CHS detailed the collaboration while it was announced during the International Week of the Deaf. The two groups were at the “Creating an Accessible World” event and described what the partnership will deliver.
For example, it will promote the idea of deaf and hard of hearing getting driver and partner jobs with Uber. It will also seeks to find ways to improve communication methods between drivers and passengers, something that is arguably essential to Uber’s business model.
The First Ride for Free program gives deaf and hard of hearing customers a discount on their first ride with Uber. At the event, CHS and Uber also announced a new promotion running September 26 through September 29 that will donate $1 from every UberWAV and UberASSIST fare throughout Canada. The donation will go directly to CHS.

That’s why we’re so excited to announce this exciting partnership with the Canadian Hearing Society with the goal of opening up even more work opportunities for the Deaf and hard of hearing community in Canada,” said Sheldon McCormick the general manager of Uber Ontario.
“I applaud Uber for being an innovative employer, and I am so excited about our partnership,” said Julia Dumanian, President and CEO, CHS. “Today, we are celebrating this announcement and how it will help increase accessibility and communication between Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people.”
