Intact Insurance Uber Ridesharing Car Insurance Ontario FAQ

What is ridesharing?

Ridesharing is a new industry that allows customers to acquire vehicles through a smartphone application. The app connects passengers with freelance drivers and lets them pay for the fare (via digital payment methods) and set the destination before ever entering the vehicle. Ridesharing companies such as Uber are not allowed to be hailed like traditional taxis and must be arranged through an app. A ridesharing platform will allow passengers to view the drivers/vehicles closest to them when arranging a journey.

What is Uber?

Uber is the leading provider of ridesharing services in Canada, and indeed around the world. The US-based company operates the technology platform that allows passengers to connect with freelance drivers and organize trips (see above). Founded in 2009, Uber started as a black car service in California and quickly adopted a ridesharing model that allowed it to grow at a rapid rate. Drivers can use their own vehicles while working for Uber and are viewed as independent workers using the Uber platform.

Who can apply for an Intact Insurance Uber policy?

Any driver who wishes to work for Uber in Ontario. Intact Insurance offers dynamic commercial ridesharing car insurance by allowing drivers from any carrier to add the Intact policy on top of their personal auto coverage.

Which Uber operations are covered by Intact Insurance?

How does Intact’s Uber coverage work?

Intact Insurance has developed a flexible package that lets any personal auto insurance policyholder add the company’s commercial Uber coverage on top of their protection. Through four phases, Intact protects drivers from the moment they activate the app to search for fares, to the moment they drop off the passenger. When not working for Uber, the driver will be covered under the normal terms of their personal policy at no extra cost.

Am I covered under my personal auto insurance?

The standard auto insurance policy in Ontario excludes carrying passengers for compensation. Intact Insurance has changed their standard policy to remove that exclusion. For this reason, we recommend that while Uber drivers  are using their vehicle for personal use, they have a policy with Intact Insurance, as customers are protected as usual under their personal auto insurance policy with Intact at no additional cost.

Do I get proof of my coverage, like a pink slip?

Proof of coverage will be provided in the form of a digital document that can be presented in the event of a collision or infraction.

How am I covered in the event of an accident?

In the event of an accident, you and your passengers are protected by this policy, covering third party liability, standard accident benefits and physical damage. This means you are covered as you would be with a personal auto insurance policy at a basic level.

Who do Uber drivers claim off?

Intact works directly with Uber. This means in the event of a claim, a customer should contact Uber directly via email or the mobile application. Uber will then pass the claimant information on to Intact Insurance, who will then begin to adjust the claim. Intact has also created a dedicated Uber claims line, which can be accessed by calling 1-866-470-2335.

Will my personal protection be affected if I am involved in a claim?

Intact Insurance provides a commercial policy that sits on top of a personal auto policy, but is not joined to it. If an Uber drivers is involved in a collision while working for the company, the claim is made against the commercial policy and not the personal protection. When not working for Uber, any claims or other insurance needs will be covered by the personal auto policy.

Is Intact’s product available outside of Ontario?

Yes. The company actually debuted this policy in Alberta, making it available from July 1, 2016, after the province approved the creation of ridesharing insurance products. The company plans to expand the policy nationwide, but no fixed plans are in place.
